About Us
Mission Statement
Clayboys is a DIY shave ice business comprised of local young men. Our team works together to serve the greater DC area a delicious frozen dessert for an affordable price. We pride ourselves on both friendly and quality service from our mobile trucks, events carts, and our original location on Bethesda Avenue. We’re committed to serving the most traditional and delicious Hawaiian shave ice in the area. We use filtered water for our ice, cane sugar syrups, and the same method of crafting shave-ice popularized on the Hawaiian islands - with our signature Swedish fish at the bottom. Our intention is to keep both product pricing and events rates as low as possible in order to be accessible to everyone in our community. Our Story
Clayboy’s Shave Ice was founded by Scott Styer at his home in Catonsville, Maryland in 1991. Scott had spent the last couple of years living in Hawaii where he learned and perfected the process of making Hawaiian style shave ice. He was trained by the legendary Aaron Furujen - who has operated a similar shave ice business in Hawaii for over 50 years. Scott was inspired to start his own business back in his hometown of Bethesda, with a goal of integrating a relaxing aspect of island life and a growing suburban city. After 30 years of successful operation, Scott, now 70 years old, decided to sell Clayboy’s in 2021. The business is now owned and operated by Bill and Dan McKinnon, who grew up eating Scott’s delicious shave ice. Bill and Dan strive to keep with the roots and traditions of Clayboy’s, while also expanding in order to bring the joy of Clayboys to the extended DMV community.

Our Product
Clayboy’s uses a special Taiwanese ice planer that shaves the ice to the perfect soft and thin texture. This texture allows the ice to absorb the syrup well, and holds the flavor throughout the cone as opposed to bleeding to the bottom of the cup. The ice is not simply crushed into small chunks like a normal snow cone. Clayboy’s currently has a menu of 15 flavors including kinds of fruit and other traditional desserts. Clayboy’s is 100% vegan, dairy free, and gluten free. Clayboy's also has Kosher certified flavors available upon request.
Private Parties and Events
Clayboy’s has now expanded from one location, and now offers catering at private events. Both carts & trucks are available! To book Clayboy’s at your special occasion please refer to our private events sheet (linked below) and the "book an event" button. Any questions can be sent to clayboysbethesda@gmail.com. Please let us know the number of people attending your event, and the amount of time you would like us to stay. Clayboy’s can accommodate anything from a birthday party with 10 kids to a music festival with 5000 attendants.
Large Public Events
Large public event requests are great for: school events, fairs, festivals, fundraisers, swim meets, sports tournaments, summer camps and more! Feel free to contact clayboysbethesda@gmail.com with questions. You can request public vending through the link below.
Clayboys Gives Back
Clayboys values the importance of charity within our local community. Any person connected to a local homeless shelter can schedule a Clayboys truck to come and serve the less fortunate free of charge.
